I prefer to focus my teaching on learning to play by ear, which is the approach I use, and still use, in my own playing. It allows you to intuitively learn to play rather than just learning how to read notes. We don’t learn to play by sight reading from sheet music.
I emphasize a fun, organic learning atmosphere, focusing on basic theory, rhythm, lead improvisation, ear training, phrasing, and timing. I especially encourage students to bring in recordings of music they would like to learn, which helps develop their own ear by learning to play songs note for note.
I teach all levels of students, from outright beginners to performing musicians that have been playing guitar for decades. At this time I usually do not teach kids under 14, and I only take on those over 14 which have great aptitude and passion for guitar.
Most importantly, I always strive to make the lesson time enjoyable for my students of all ages. I have found that music can be very therapeutic, especially learning how to play it on your own. I have found many of my students look at their time here as a way to escape into the world of music and creativity. This serves as a great outlet that builds confidence, concentration, dedication, and discipline. The bottom line is that learning to play guitar is very satisfying and fun.
Lessons are always customized for each student’s level and musical interest. I look forward to working with all of you future guitar slingers!
